Tom founded The Creamery in 1971 along with a number of colleagues and former students from Iowa State University, where he was a member of the drama faculty for five years. He has served as C.E.O. of The Creamery since its first season. For the past 34 years, he has written, directed, designed sets, and occasionally acted. His character, the irrepressible Beanhole from Cowchip Jamboree will show up again this season during the 35th Anniversary Celebration Week at The Creamery. His scripts written and produced here at The Creamery include Playing Doctor, Beautiful Mourning, Home on the Iowa, Lost and Found, With All My Love Bill, Blue Star Mother, Mr. Pennypincher Presents, and three versions of Holiday Hijinks. This season Tom has joined forces with his wife and long-time Creamery colleague, Meg Merckens to co-write Dates wtih a Nut. Tom has two grown children and a beautiful grandson. He and Meg make their home in the village of South Amana. Tom says, "Great wife, great kids, a great hobby, and a (part-time) job you love, what more could one ask? Life is sweet."
